Four transit hubs

The URBIMM project relies on
comparative urbanismComparative urbanism is an approach that involves the systematic study of similarity and difference among cities.
to explain differences and similarities in urban migration infrastructures across four European transit hubs: Brussels, Rotterdam, Thessaloniki, and Trieste.

These four cities were selected because of their geographical location along prevalent irregular migration routes, the number of undocumented migrants, and the varying local institutional contexts.

In comparing these cities, we explore variations in urban migration infrastructures in terms of their (a) relative orientation towards entry, transit, settlement and exit depending on their geographical location along irregular migration routes and (b) degree of formalization depending on the local institutional context.

Brussels, BE

Rotterdam, NL

Trieste, IT

Thessaloniki, GR

URBIMM compares how European cities deal with the local challenge posed by 'transit migration' by studying how local formal and informal migration infrastructures facilitate the arrival, transit, settlement, and exit of undocumented migrants.
