'In transit': Urban migration infrastructures for irregular migrant mobility

An international research project on the local conditions, service provision and policies towards undocumented migrants in Europe

about the project

URBIMM unravels the interplay between urban migration infrastructures and migrants on the move in European cities

The URBIMM project investigates the role that cities play in mediating the mobility of migrants on the move in Europe. In particular, the research compares how urban migration infrastructures in four European cities (Brussels, Rotterdam, Trieste and Thessaloniki) facilitate the entry, transit, settlement and exit of migrants on the move. By closely cooperating with professionals and immigrant communities, the project aims to co-create interventions, highlight best practices and formulate recommendations for improving the situation of undocumented migrants in European cities.

Irregular migration is not a temporary ‘crisis’, but a social phenomenon that is continuously produced and reproduced by an accumulation of factors including globalization, global inequality, climate change, political unrest, warfare, lack of legal avenues for migration, and migration control.
